The United States Dance Championships are conducted under the rules and regulations governing competitions and championships recognized by the National Dance Council of America, Inc (NDCA).

Amateur Pre-Teen Championships
At the June, 2007 NDCA meeting, the Board of Governors voted unanimously on the following dress code for pre-teens. The rule change also included "no embellishments of standard figures". This rule change is effective January 1, 2008.

Pre-Teen One-Dance or Two-Dance Events - Competition organizers may require that the shirts/tops be
white and the trousers/skirts be black
Rule change to X, F, 1. (page 31) addition to the end of existing text.
No embellishments of standard figures. No change of levels, head rolls, foot flicks, syncopations or delayed timings unless specified within the approved syllabus. Free arms should rise no higher than shoulder level.
Newcomers – Gentlemen & Ladies
For students entering in the Newcomer division costumes will be optional. Current costume styles are recommended and must be in good taste.
American Style – Ladies
Cocktail dance dresses with flared skirts are recommended for the Ballroom Divisions. The length of the gown is optional, provided the feet are visible. Current styles in the Rhythm Division are recommended provided that costumes do not reveal the buttocks or other parts of the body indiscriminately. If, in the opinion of the Rules Committee, too much flesh is exposed, a couple will be penalized and/or disqualified.
American Style - Gentlemen
In the Ballroom Division, Tuxedos, or Tails are recommended; with black or navy blue preferred. Current styles in the Latin and Rhythm Divisions are recommended.
Theatrical – Ladies & Gentlemen
Costumes are acceptable. Please note that all competitors in any Theatrical category will be required to wear costumes that do not reveal the buttocks or other parts of the body indiscriminately. If, in the opinion of the Rules Committee, too much flesh is exposed, a couple will be penalized and/or disqualified.
International Style – Ladies
Traditional Ball Gowns or Full Length Gowns currently in vogue in the International Standard section are recommended. Current styles in the Latin section are recommended provided that costumes do not reveal the buttocks or other parts of the body indiscriminately. If, in the opinion of the Rules Committee, too much flesh is exposed, a couple will be penalized and/or disqualified.
International Style – Gentlemen
Formal Tail Suits in the International Standard section are recommended. Current styles in the Latin section are recommended.
GENERAL
Competitors in any division who wear costumes deemed by the organizers to be unsuitable will be requested to change. If such request is not followed, the competitors entry will be cancelled and the entry fee will NOT be refunded.
